1.INTRODUCTION
Today everybody wants to get updated
with the latest happenings around the world. But in today’s fast life nobody
has time to sit in front of television all day and watch breaking news.
Nowadays web media has become a great medium of educating and informing people.
Majority of the people use internet on their smart phones and thus they can
easily access online news portals whenever and wherever they want to know that
what is going on around the whole world. People can get news of any region just
by putting an appropriate keyword in the search engine.
There is no doubt that most of the people
spend their more time on web media for reading news and information rather than
spending time on traditional media like television, radio, newspaper etc.
Nepal now has a
critical mass of online users. Low startup costs mean that new portals are
sprouting all over the place. Mainstream media also have digital editions,
although in many cases their sites are just dumping ground for print
content.
1.1 Online News Portal
A portal is a door or an entryway. The
term online refers to the Internet and the web pages that form part of the
World Wide Web. An online portal, or web portal, is a website that provides an
entry point for a range of information, tools, and links.
An online portal may serve a variety of
purposes. Some types of online portal are meant to serve as a one-stop shop for
most of what certain Internet users would need most. By offering an array of
the most often used types of information and services and sometimes allowing
for personalization; an online portal can save a user a lot of time. One part
of the typical offerings for this type of online portal are the top current
events that are found in many newspapers: headlines and links to important
national and maybe local news, weather forecasts, the day’s primetime
television listing, stock market reports, and sports headlines. Also typical
are entertainment news, health news, dating and romance tips, a horoscope,
trending topics, hyperlinks to related sites, a search engine, and sometimes
free, web-based email.
An online news portal serves many
purposes:
1) Provide Information: Online news portal give information about
every field- political, social, sports, health, science, entertainment etc to
the public.
2) Educate People: Online news portals not only provide
information but also educate people about the social & political structure.
People come to know about the upcoming challenges and learn how to combat the
circumstances.
3) Instant & Latest News: Online news portals made latest news only a
single click away. People can get a minute update across the globe only by a
single click.
4) News Per Interest: People have their own interest. Some might be
have interest in politics while others can have interest in sports or
entertainment. Web media does not work on bullet theory. People have ample of options to choose from.
They can read news as per their interest.
5) Easily Accessible: Online news portals are easily accessible.
Today 66 per cent of people have smart phones and they access internet on their
smart phones only. People can get updated with the latest updates anywhere they
go.
6) Live Coverage of Sports: Online news portals provide live coverage of
sports. News portals do not let disappoint fans of any sports no matter whether
it is cricket match or a tennis tournament. Fans can get updated with the scores
while they are at work.
7) Easy Feedback Receiver: It is a big task for traditional media to
collect feedback from their readers or viewers. But for web media, it is not a
hard nut to crack. News portals can get feedback from their viewers by comment
option. Even news website can get comment on their every news. It is a two way
communication. People can easily send their views and feedback.
8) Minute to Minute coverage of any
breaking news: News websites do minute
to minute coverage of breaking news. It is not possible for people to wait for
next morning for news or sit all time in front of television to watch breaking
news. Web media has broken all these barriers. People can get news on their
mobile anywhere they go.
9) Exclusive Videos: People can watch exclusive videos according
to their convenience. People are not bound with the time.
10) Pictures of news events: People can watch exclusive pictures of news
events.
11) Archive: It is the most important feature. People can
get news of past anytime by searching it in archive section.
1.2 Comment on Online News Portal
The only way to expand the reach of
media access was to write the letter to the editor in newspapers before. But
after the drastic development of mass media nowadays, there are many ways to
comment or post the feedback. Literally commenting is the free flow of
expression in democracy. May be because of that the media houses give space to
the audience naming the column 'letter to the editor' or they provide the blank
space for 'comments'. Another aspect of giving comment in broadcast media is
the vox pop, voice of people or the audience on any contemporary issues. It's
all about media outreach. People love to comment when they feel like. Online
media do not suppress readers' views rather allow them to appear on the post. It invites
its readers saying "प्रतिकृया दिनुहोस".
In online news portal, the simple way to
link all kind of people with media is by giving space and publishing the
viewers comment. The viewers express their view and feelings freely upon what
they read. This is the direct way to do the intervention. But the emotion will
not work, the comment should be fact. Comments are always in the form of
criticism, satirical, straightforward like a bullet. It is better if they are
not biased, meaningful and any group or party oriented.
It doesn't mean that the viewer or commentator
is lower level and the writer is superior one. In other media, the comments are
edited and limited into words and seconds but in online media, the comments are
published as it is. In case of unethical and vulgar comments are edited
otherwise there is no chance of editing from anyone.
Why is comment needed?
1.
It corrects or guides the mistakes.
2.
It encourages for writing more.
3.
It helps media to know the popularity
and volume of viewers.
4.
It is best way for online media to bring
viewer in one place who are in favor of them.
5.
It helps to stop the wrong doings in
media.
6.
It is the best platform to promote and
publicize the works, campaigns and activities of any individual or
institutions.
7.
The editor and reporter can generate new
ideas of editing and reporting with help of comments.
8.
This is the only place for marginalized
and disadvantaged communities to have access and to do the intervention in
contemporary society.
9.
This is the place to express disagreements,
complaints as well as can add more ideas, facts and realities.
2.OBJECTIVE
OF STUDY
The
main objective of the paper is:
1. To
find out the current status of 'reader
comments' on political issues in online news portals of Nepal.
2. To know the importance of reader comments for
online news media.
3.
LIMITATION
OF STUDY
The internet based journalism can't be
bounded geographically. Nepalese are operating and launching online papers from
inside and outside country. Here, I have selected four most readable news
portals of Nepal onlinekhabar.com, setopati.com, ratopati.com and
pahilopost.com respectively. This paper will study only the published
comments of three day's political news of these four news websites. The study
will not include the issues of international politics.

LITERATURE
REVIEW
There are so many studies related to the
internet and new media. Tribhuvan University and other university graduates
have written thesis regarding this theme. Even the study upon the interaction,
feedback and commenting trend of on social and online news media has also
started.
Luckily, I got the thesis of Umesh
Shrestha(Salokya). When I went through his thesis I became confuse about my
topic because he has excellently done the standard research work of all aspects
of reader comments. So, I have just tried to look current status like how much
comments they receive and what kind of issues they get comments within
political news, nature of the received comments and so on.

RESEARCH
METHODOLOGY
Basically, there are two types of online
media in Nepal. One is website operated by traditional media and another is
purely operated online media. Nepal is multilingual and multi ethnic country.
Though, most of the online media are running either in Nepali or English
languages, I have selected to study on Nepali language online news portal. This
paper is prepared after the completion of the study of the comments of four
online news media; onlinekhabar.com, setopati.com, ratopati.com and
pahilopost.com.
Firstly, I have collected all the comments
of political news from August 10 to August 12, 2015. Then, I have analyzed
those comments according to my checklists. I took political related news and
comments from various 'menus' of these four news portals. Pahilopost has the
menu named 'Politics' and 'National', Onlinekhabar has 'News' menu, Setopati
has 'Politics' menu and Ratopati has menu named 'News' and 'National'. The
collected comments are analyzed in holistic approach. There is not specific
clearance like the tone, language, mood, length and nature of the comments.
Mostly secondary data are used in this
paper. Secondary data have been taken from previous related literature and
online documents. Both qualitative and quantitative data have been used. Some
of the checklists have been prepared for the easiness of collection of data.
Checklists were:
Role of political news headlines for
commenting.
Volume of the comments.
Use of language in comments
Nature of comments etc.
6. ANALYSIS AND
DATA PRESENTATION
6.1 Online News Portals in Nepal:
Till 2072/4/19 date, the 182 online
media have registered for the enlistment at Press Council Nepal. Amongst all, the
selected four online media onlinekhabar.com, setopati.com, ratopati.com and
pahilopost.com are fall under top 20 sites in Nepal according to the alexa.com.
Alexa Internet, Inc. is a California-based company that provides commercial web
traffic data. The below data have been retrieved from internet dated on 2015
August 14.
(The sites in the top sites lists are
ordered by their 1 month alexa traffic rank. The 1 month rank is calculated
using a combination of average daily visitors and page views over the past
month. The site with the highest combination of visitors and page views is
ranked #1).
The editor of this news site is Arun
Baral. Its head office is in New Baneshwor, Kathmandu, Nepal and is publishing
by Onlinekhabar Nepal Pvt.Ltd.

three days thoroughly. Analysis could have been interesting if the selected

while comment:
An online news portal links all kind of
people with media by giving space and publishing the viewers comment. The
viewers express their view and feelings freely upon what they read on the other
hand. This is the direct way to do the intervention. Comments are always in the
form of criticism, satirical, straightforward. It is better if they are not
biased, meaningful and any group or party oriented. But sometimes it happens
while commenting. Some of the attacking but unmannered type of comments is

7. SUMMARY OF ONLINE COMMENTS
Yes of course anyone is free to
put the different opinion. The comments are whether positive, negative or both. But
to present that comments depend upon the person's sense of humor. Our
access on internet based online and social media have become like Badarko
Haatma Nariwal in many cases. The use of filthy and vulgar words is
killing the civilized and original language words. The morally corrupted online media users remain busy in
using nonsense words and insulting others reputation. Sometimes, the shameless
posts and comments can be seen. They do not care about their own personality as
well. Many people comment by anonymous name and fake ID user. Most of the male
and unnamed ID users take part in such activity. It is found that most of the educated
persons use impolite, undesirable, and meaningless words and phrases. It is misleading
the society.
When we have disagreement, is
there any compulsion to write and comment freely and independently? Many questions rise like don't we have the culture of
right use of internet? Is it good to forget own language and manner? Perhaps, the people freely and carelessly comment due to
lack of strong legal provision of state regarding the cyber and internet.
Nepalese have started to comment and take part in the course
of conversation and discourse. It is indeed very good initiation. It is problematic
when someone uses words and phrases without caring its originality and essence.
Those nonsense words and phrases are directly and indirectly affecting the huge
mass in society. Comments of online media are important for any content writer
and columnist from where they get idea to write, reefing and think better. And
still the issue talk about it is very much important that people must use the
acceptable words so they sound polite and civic. It is everyone's social responsibility to give the constructive comments.
